04Amy is a mom of a homeschooling mom of a 5-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl. They tend to follow the Charlotte Mason method, Amy explains, and they love “living books.” When it came to making the decision to homeschool, Amy says having it any other way was never an option, they just knew it was what they wanted.

“My children have never been to preschool or public school of any kind,” she explains. “The thought of it is strange and foreign to me. Although we are Christian, we do not homeschool for faith-based reasons. I strongly believe that preserving our family and the short amount of time we all have together is best accomplished through homeschooling. We weave our faith into homeschooling because its a natural extension of who we are. However, it is not the driving force of why we do it.”

While they have a separate room for homeschooling, Amy explains that learning happens all over the house, though they keep all materials in one room to stay organized.

“In kindergarten, I had our books and curriculum all over the home,” she says. “It seemed that I could never find what I wanted whenI needed it. In addition, there were so many things simply not being used because I would just forget about them….[I] forget we owned them!!! It was also problematic to have projects on the island in the kitchen that I’d have to clean up to cook supper. Plus, my kitchen table was always covered with books and crafts. Honestly, I hated it. now we have everything in a central location… games, books, curriculum, manipulatives, maps, workboxes, etc. It is great because the room is there should we need it, but we have the freedom to go outside and do math, cuddle on the couch and read, or lay on the floor and color.”

Below is the “word wall,” the computer station and the bookcase. 02

Each child has a work box so they know what assignments they need to complete.

The shelf on the left contains manipulatives, craft supplies and games. The computer on the right is where Amy works.

This desk is actually an old converted coffee table. Each child has a drawer where they can keep their own “in progress” projects and the ever so important pencil boxes!

A HUGE thanks to Amy for allowing us to take a peek into her house. If you’d like to see more about her family, you can check out her Hidden Creek Homeschool blog.
