Home Tour: A Family of Seven

6 September 2009 540 views 2 Comments

There are certain houses, such as a builder’s model home or one for sale, that are the essence of serenity. While most wouldn’t describe a homeschool room as “serene,” that’s just the feeling we get from Cheryl Wilcox’s  homeschool room. The family of seven has five children, ages one through ten.

The Wilcox family became interested in homeschooling through women Cheryl knew in a scrapbooking group. When they began to consider options for their eldest’s education, the family, which is Catholic, decided to choose homeschooling. Since then, they have added four more children to the mix. Cheryl, who says their method is Charlotte Mason based, was kind enough to give us a peek into the homeschool areas of her home.

The homeschool room is actually a dedicated school room. The family had their house custom built three years ago and designed this room to fit in with their lifestyle. It is located next to a stairwell that brings you to the kitchen, garage or mudroom (depending on the way you turn at the bottom steps).

The bottom shelves contain her youngest child’s toys.

Here’s the room from another angle. Her youngest child’s crib is in here, but you can’t see it in the picture.

Cheryl keeps the art supplies hidden behind these cabinet doors– and out of the hands of prying little ones. The sink provides for easy clean-up.

This walk-in closet holds all their resources, including those that they haven’t gotten around to using yet.

Wow that room is amazing. I think anyone would love that, even if they didn’t homeschool.
